ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: This study investigated the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms in high school adolescents from public schools and its association with electronic device use. Methods: The sample consisted of 961 boys and girls aged 14–19 years who answered a questionnaire regarding the use of computers and electronic games, and questions about pain symptoms and physical activity. Furthermore, anthropometric assessments of all volunteers were performed. The chi-squared test and a multiple logistic regression model were used for the inferential analysis. Results: The presence of musculoskeletal pain symptoms was reported by 65.1% of the adolescents, being more prevalent in the thoracolumbar spine (46.9%), followed by pain in the upper limbs, representing 20% of complaints. The mean time of use for computers and electronic games was 1.720 and 583 minutes per week, respectively. The excessive use of electronic devices was demonstrated to be a risk factor for cervical and lumbar pain. Female gender was associated with the presence of pain in different body parts. Presence of a paid job was associated with cervical pain. Conclusion: A high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in adolescents, as well as an increased amount of time using digital devices was observed. However, it was only possible to observe an association between the increased use of these devices and the presence of cervical and low back pain.


Resumo Objetivo: Investigar a presença de sintomas musculoesqueléticos em adolescentes estudantes do ensino médio em escolas públicas e sua associação com o uso de dispositivos eletrônicos. Método: A amostra foi composta por 961 meninos e meninas entre 14 e 19 anos que responderam questionário sobre o uso de computadores, jogos eletrônicos e questões relacionadas a sintomas dolorosos e atividade física. Além disso, todos os voluntários foram submetidos à avaliação antropométrica. Para análise inferencial foram usados os testes de qui-quadrado e modelo múltiplo de regressão logística. Resultados: A presença de sintomas de dor musculoesquelética foi reportada por 65,1% dos adolescentes, mais prevalente na coluna toracolombar (46,9%), seguida por dor nos membros superiores (20%). O tempo médio de uso de computador e jogos eletrônicos foi de 1.720 e 583 minutos por semana, respectivamente. O uso excessivo dos dispositivos eletrônicos mostrou-se como fator de risco para dor cervical e lombar. O sexo feminino apresentou associação com a presença de dor em diferentes partes do corpo. A atividade profissional esteve associada com a dor cervical. Conclusão: Observou-se alta prevalência de dor musculoesquelética nos adolescentes e elevado tempo de uso dos dispositivos eletrônicos. Entretanto, foi possível observar somente a associação do uso excessivo desses dispositivos e a presença de dor cervical e lombar.

Introducción. En el Archivo Nacional de la República de Cuba, existe contaminación electromagnética y la influencia del campo magnético oscilante de frecuencia extremadamente baja podría cuantificarse con microorganismos patógenos aislados de su ambiente interior. Objetivo. Cuantificar la influencia de este tipo de campo magnético sobre el crecimiento de microorganismos patógenos aislados del ambiente en el Archivo Nacional de la República de Cuba. Materiales y métodos. Se emplearon cinco microorganismos: Streptococcus sp. (1), Listeria sp. (2) y Candida guillermondii (3), aislados en el Archivo, así como Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 (4) y Saccharomyces cerevisiae (5), como referencia. Se les aplicó un campo magnético oscilante de frecuencia extremadamente baja de 60 Hz/220 V de 3 mT durante dos horas, en tres tubos de cultivo con agua destilada y con caldo nutriente. Después se inocularon 0,1 ml en placas de Petri con los medios de cultivo agar CromoCen SC (1 y 2), agar de dextrosa y papa (3), agar CromoCen CC 4227 (4) y agar con extracto de malta (5). Las colonias se contaron (log UFC/ml) mediante el procesamiento digital de las imágenes de las placas de Petri empleando el programa MatLab ® . Resultados. Se observó una estimulación significativa (p=0,05) de la cantidad de colonias tratadas con respecto a los controles, siendo mayor en el caldo nutriente que en el agua destilada y más en las bacterias (caldo nutriente-colonias tratadas: 9,43 a 10,62 UFC/ml) que en las levaduras (caldo nutriente-colonias tratadas: 8,31 a 8,79 UFC/ml). La estimulación se produjo en orden decreciente así: Listeria sp., E. coli ATCC 25922, Streptococcus sp., C. guillermondii y S. cerevisiae . Conclusión. Se concluyó que el campo magnético aplicado tuvo un efecto estimulante sobre los microorganismos estudiados, lo cual potencia el riesgo para la salud del personal y los visitantes del Archivo Nacional de la República de Cuba.


Introduction: Electromagnetic pollution has been detected at the Archivo Nacional de la República de Cuba and the influence of extremely low frequency magnetic fields could be quantified with pathogenic microorganisms isolated from the indoor environment. Objective: To quantify the influence of an extremely low frequency magnetic field on the growth of pathogenic microorganisms isolated from the environment at the Archivo Nacional. Materials and methods: We used five microorganisms isolated at the Archivo Nacional: Streptococcus sp. (1), Listeria sp. (2) and Candida guillermondii (3), and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 (4) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (5) as references. We applied this magnetic field of extremely low frequency, 60 Hz/220 V (3 mT), for two hours to these microorganisms on three culture tubes with distilled water and nutrient broth. Then we inoculated 0.1 mL in the following solid culture mediums on Petri dishes: CromoCen SC Agar (1 and 2), Potato Dextrose Agar (3), CromoCen DC 4227 (4) and Malt Extract Agar (5). The colonies were counted (log CFU/mL) by digital processing of the images of Petri dishes using the MatLab ® tool. Results: We observed a statistically significant stimulation (p=0.05) in the quantity of treated colonies as compared to controls, which was higher in nutrient broth than in distilled water, and in bacteria (nutrient broth and treated colonies: 9.43 to 10.62 CFU/mL) as compared with yeasts (nutrient broth-treated colonies: 8.31 to 8.79 CFU/mL). In decreasing order, stimulation was as follows: Listeria sp., E. coli ATCC 25922, Streptococcus sp., C. guillermondii and S. cerevisiae . Conclusion: We concluded that the magnetic field applied had a stimulating effect on the microorganisms under study, which increases the risk to the health of staff and visitors at the Archivo Nacional .

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the root surface defect produced by hand curettes and ultrasonic tips with different power settings. Forty root surfaces were divided into 4 groups according the treatment: Gracey curettes, ultrasonic scaler at 10 percent power, ultrasonic scaler at 50 percent power and ultrasonic scaler at 100 percent power. Each specimen was instrumented with 15 strokes and the and divided in the middle to evaluate: (1) the defect depth produced by the instrumentation and (2) contact area of the instrument tips, which was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. ANOVA and Tukey's test were used for statistical analysis (a=0.05). The results (mean ± SD) of the contact area showed significantly greater defects (p<0.05) for the hand instrumented groups (2092.9 ± 482) compared to the ultrasonic groups (606.8 ± 283.0; 858.6 ± 422.5; 1212.0 ± 366.7, respectively), independently of the power setting. The values for the defect depth on root surface showed no statistically significant difference (p<0.05) between hand instrumentation (66.1 ± 34.0) and ultrasonic scaling at 10 percent, 50 percent or 100 percent power settings (52.4 ± 22.1; 72.0 ± 29.9; 77.7 ± 37.7, respectively). The findings of this study demonstrate that ultrasonic instrumentation produced a similar defect depth to that of hand instrumentation, with a smaller tip contact area, independently of the power setting used for scaling.


O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o defeito na superfície radicular produzido por curetas manuais e instrumento ultra-sônico em diferentes potências. Quarenta superfícies radiculares foram divididas de acordo com o tratamento em 4 grupos: a) Curetas Gracey; b) Instrumento ultra-sônico a 10 por cento; c) Instrumento ultra-sônico a 50 por cento; d) Instrumento ultra-sônico a 100 por cento. Cada amostra recebeu 15 movimentos de raspagem e foram divididas ao meio para avaliar: (1) a profundidade do defeito produzido pela instrumentação e (2) a área de contato do instrumento com a superfície. Todas as superfícies foram então avaliadas com o uso de Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura. Para a análise estatística foi utilizado o teste Tukey/ANOVA. Os resultados (média ± DP) encontrados para a área de contato foram significantemente maiores para a instrumentação manual (2092,9 ± 482,0) que para os instrumentos ultra-sônicos, independentemente da potência utilizada (606,8 ± 283,0; 858,6 ± 422,5; 1212,0 ± 366,7, respectivamente). Os valores para a profundidade do defeito demonstraram numericamente, mas não estatisticamente, diferenças entre a instrumentação manual (66,1 ± 34,0) e ultra-sônica em 10 por cento, 50 por cento ou 100 por cento de potência (52,4 ± 22,1; 72,0 ± 29,9; 77,7 ± 37,7, respectivamente). Os resultados encontrados demonstraram que a instrumentação ultra-sônica produziu defeitos com profundidade similar aos produzidos pela instrumentação manual, com um menor contato do instrumento, independente da potência utilizada.
